Quick Answer

WooCommerce MCP connects an AI assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT to your store through the Model Context Protocol. The assistant can look up and change products, orders, customers, coupons and stock, using tools you have explicitly allowed, instead of you clicking through the WooCommerce screens.

Who This Is For

Store owners, managers and agencies running WooCommerce who lose hours to repetitive catalog edits, order lookups and coupon setup, and want an AI to handle them under clear limits.

What WooCommerce MCP Is

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI assistants call tools on another system. A WordPress MCP plugin turns your site into that set of tools, and the WooCommerce part exposes your store: products, categories, orders, customers, coupons and stock levels.

So instead of exporting a spreadsheet, editing it and re-importing, you ask “which products are out of stock?” and get an answer. For the bigger picture, see our WordPress MCP server guide.

What an AI Can Do in Your Store

AreaWhat it can doNeeds your confirmation?
ProductsList, search, create and update products, descriptions, prices and categoriesDeleting a product does
StockCheck stock levels and set stock quantitiesDepends on your safety mode
OrdersLook up orders and their details, and change an order’s statusStatus changes do
CustomersLook up customers and their basic detailsRead only by default
CouponsCreate discount codes with amounts and rulesDepends on your safety mode
Why that matters: store changes cost real money. Anything destructive, such as deleting a product or changing an order’s status, always stops and asks for explicit confirmation, even in the most permissive mode.

Prompts That Work

Be specific about the product, order or rule. A few examples:

  • “Show me every product that is out of stock or has fewer than five units left.”
  • “List orders from the last seven days that are still processing.”
  • “Rewrite the descriptions for the three products in the Skincare category. Keep them under 80 words and show me before saving.”
  • “Create a coupon SPRING15 for 15% off, one use per customer, expiring at the end of the month.”
  • “Find products with no category and suggest where each should go.”

Ask for a preview on anything that changes data. “Show me what you plan to change, then wait” is a cheap safeguard.

How to Set It Up

1. Install

Install and activate the RevUpNow MCP plugin. WooCommerce must already be active.

2. Connect

Run the setup wizard and connect Claude, ChatGPT or another MCP client.

3. Allow

Start in Read Only. Enable the store permission only when you want edits.

4. Try

Ask a read-only question first, then make one small edit on a single product.

The full walkthrough is in the setup and connection guide.

Keeping a Live Store Safe

  • Start read-only. Reading orders and stock is useful on day one and cannot change anything.
  • Grant store access separately. A page-editing task does not need access to orders or customers.
  • Back up first. Take a full database backup before any bulk change to prices or descriptions.
  • Preview bulk changes. Ask for a list of what will change, review it, then approve.
  • Try one item first. Run a bulk edit on a single product, check it, then repeat.
  • Use the audit log. Every tool call is recorded, so you can see what ran and when.
  • Mind customer data. Orders and customers contain personal information, so only enable those tools for clients and people you trust.
Be careful with prices: after any price change, open the product on the storefront and confirm the price shown. On stores using extensions such as subscriptions, some price fields are stored separately, so verify the result rather than assuming it saved everywhere.

What to Still Do Yourself

An AI assistant is good at lookups, bulk edits and drafting. Keep a human on decisions that carry risk:

  • Refunds and disputes. Handle these in WooCommerce and your payment provider.
  • Pricing strategy. The AI can apply a price, but you decide it.
  • Customer communication. Let it draft; you send.
  • Tax and legal settings. Change these deliberately, not by chat.

Myths Worth Clearing Up

“The AI can wipe my catalog.”

Destructive actions require explicit confirmation, and you control which permissions are on at all.

“My customer data goes to a third party.”

Tool calls run directly between your AI client and your own site. Check your AI provider’s own data policy for what it does with the conversation.

“It only works with Claude.”

No. Any MCP-compatible client works, including ChatGPT, Cursor, Windsurf, Cline and Gemini CLI.

“It replaces my store manager.”

It takes over repetitive lookups and edits. Judgment, customer relationships and strategy stay with you.

FAQ

What is WooCommerce MCP?

It is a way to connect an AI assistant to your WooCommerce store through the Model Context Protocol so it can look up and manage products, orders, customers, coupons and stock under permissions you set.

Can the AI change order statuses or delete products?

Only if you allow it, and those actions always ask for explicit confirmation first.

Is it safe to use on a live store?

Start in Read Only mode, back up before bulk changes, preview edits, and widen permissions only as needed. Review the audit log regularly.

Does it work with Claude and ChatGPT?

Yes. Claude Desktop and ChatGPT connect through a built-in OAuth sign-in, and other MCP clients such as Cursor, Windsurf, Cline and Gemini CLI also work.

Will it work with WooCommerce extensions like subscriptions?

Core products, orders, coupons and stock are supported. Extensions can store data in their own fields, so test a change on one item and verify it on the storefront first.
